The Downfall of Trump and MAGA Could Be the GOP’s Fresh Start

Trump’s ego — once the driving force behind his political ascent — now threatens to collapse the MAGA movement he created. But that collapse could be exactly what the Republican Party needs to rebuild itself into something saner, stronger, and more unifying.

He can’t resist the tease. “I’m not joking,” Donald Trump told NBC this spring when asked about running again in 2028. “There are methods you could do it.” In that one line, the former president managed to merge bravado and defiance — the same traits that fueled his rise now defining his potential fall. By floating the prospect of a third term, Trump reminded America that his movement has never been about party or policy — only personality. And that personality may be pulling the MAGA coalition toward the same cliff he’s dangling from.
